Mirrool to Moama

Monday  we headed for the Murray River , famous for it’s ability to transport a large range of goods down the river on paddle steamers in the early days of settlement. We stayed at” Merool on the Murray.” Yep the name sounds very much the same as the last place.

I had a paddle in the Murray but was surprised how low it was after such a big flood in December. I had a swim in the pool and we went for dinner at the RSL ( Returned Services League’s )club.

I felt so sorry for them all . There was still a lot to be done , lots of of cleaning and reclaiming of their lives after the floods . Some of the cabins here at the van park had been made to resemble the old riverside as it. would have been in its hay day.

Coonabarabran to Mirrool  NSW

So many little towns that have disappeared since their hay day. Mirrool was built on the grain and rail industry in the late 1800 and early 1900’s  The Royal Hotel was opened in 1917 and remains as proud as ever as the centre point of this village . One day a young aboriginal man asked what the $50 pinned above the bar was for. The publican told him if he could kick the football over the top to the other side of the grain silos he could have it and so he did. Then the annual Silo Kick was born on the first weekend in October every year. A famous AFL footballer has helped to promote it for  a couple of years but he wasn’t the first the locals say.

Trip to Tasmania. 2023

Hi everyone I hope my next few weeks of blogs wont bore you . I’m warning you now I’m going to do a travel diary we are on the road for 6 weeks.

We left Goondiwindi Saturday the 4th. Our first night was free camp behind the Coonabarabran golf club. Not much sight seeing here as we are on our way to Tasmania which is our main destination. Coonabarabran is very close to Baradine where many of you know , our April retreat location .

We had a little mechanical trouble on the way. The roads have been so rough after all the floods etc we either broke or lost a shock absorber bolt. But didn’t stop us as we had 3 others and we will get a new one in Geelong.

Dragging shock absorbers

New ones on in Geelong , a bit harder without  all the right tools but they are done. Some swearing but we wont talk about that LOL.

My First Week at Retirement

When everyone went back to school I went to Bargara Beach Bundaberg . I looked after my grandchildren for a week while my son and daughter in law went back to school for student free days. It is the first time ever I have looked after them for a week. We had such good fun.

The boys went fishing yesterday but there was noon for us . I asked Ev what she wanted to do and she said go to lunch with her two grandmas .W thought that was pretty special.

First Christmas TableRunner

I had a lot of Annie Downs Christmas prints so what should I do ?? Make a table runner of course. It's finished and has pride of place on my Nana's old singer sewing machine. Decorated with a little Christams sewing machine decoration I couldn't resist. You must know I'm Christmas crazy by now. I will post more photos about that later. We are having our sewing group's Christmas party tomorrow as it is our last meeting for the year. It's always fun. Im sitting writing this smelling my contribution for tomorrow's lunch - roast chicken in the oven . Now I am hungry..
