An Elk Quilt

When your 9 year old  grandson wants to go to your sewing room to find a quilt..

“ Grandma can I have a quilt like Poppy’s. ( That was the Bear Quilt I blogged about last year.)

“ I want a big elk and that soft furry stuff on the back. ( a minke backing )

“Let’s go and find a quilt”. He had to ask several times . Of course when you have a houseful you don’t really get time to quilt. He didn’t give up. We got to the quilt room and he was lucky to find a panel in my stash. Then HE went through the stash to find some matching fabric and then there was the design process and  some cutting and sewing. I taught him to cut and he cut some strips and then he sewed a block . I am sure he thought I could make the quilt in an afternoon. Learning to wait is hard for a 9 year old.

More to come !

Poppy’s bear quilt
We decided on a peeper then some random colour square with a strip of log cabin top and bottom . This is the block he made.
I think he did well with his colour choice.

Below are the photos from the internet that inspired him.

I

He was quite excited. when he found photos of the exact panel I had in my stash.

Oh Goodness, how wonderful to have him design and even make a block to go with the panel. I remember my Joe doing something similar, though I think he was older, maybe 12. I'm sure your finished Elk quilt will be loved very much by your grandson, especially as he is so involved and has a new understanding of what is involved in making something so special.

Isn’t it wonderful that he wants one of your quilts and if will be very special, as he has had some input.

Yay, Colton! What he chose and the square he did is brilliant! You better have it done by tomorrow, Grandma!! Or maybe Christmas?
